「翻訳」
昔、ある友人が言った科白がある。
「日本に居るのならば日本語を使え」
つまり、「郷に入っては郷に従え」ということなのであるが、そういう彼女は英語を自在に操る帰国子女（そして元滞在国に戻り住む気満々）だ。
「日本にいる限り、結局はなんだかんだ言っても日本語以外使用する機会は無いだろう」
俺自身、高校ぐらいまではこう思っていた。
だが、実際には日本に居たところで英語（主に単語）は日常に溢れている。
また、（主要言語英語国に限らないが）海外旅行に行くと周囲に日本語以外が使われているのは当たり前の事である。
世界共通言語と言われている英語。
時折、
「中学までの英語を真面目にやっていれば、会話ぐらいは何とかなる」
というのを思い出し、微妙に自分に対して腹立たしくなる。
会話が出来なくては、何の意志疎通も出来ないからなぁ。
「母国語である日本語さえ出来ていないのだから、他国語に手を出さなくても」
・・・などという考えは、（今更かもしれないが）そろそろ改めないといけないのかもしれない。

"Translation"
Formerly, certain friend said this words.
"If you exist in Japan, you must speak Japanese."
In a word, "When at Rome, do as the Romans do".
She said so, but to add to study abroad once, she has a perfect command of English (and she intends back to stay once doing country).
"I stay in Japan so long as, in the end, I would not chance to use other language."
I thought so high school days.
But, as a matter of fact, it overflows English (mainly words) everyday if you stay in Japan.
And moreover, (it is not always country used English as major language) if you go travel abroad, the others language be used around-- it's a matter of course.
English is said, "World common language".
"If I studied English seriously to the extent of junior high school, I speak English now."
The thing comes back to me from time to time.
Just then, I am provoking to myself, a little.
"I don't speak anyting" is akin to "I can't be communication".
"I'm inexperienced even to speak Japanese that is my mother tongue, therefore I don't need to study different language, do I?"
