GALVESTON BAY
この曲はブルース好きの間でもあまり知られていないようなマイナーな曲です。
９７年、ブルースがアコースティックコンサートで来日したので観に行くことに。
観に行く前に、英語の勉強も兼ねて、歌詞の和訳をしてみようかと。
辞書を片手に、アコースティックアルバム「THE GHOST OF TOM JOAD」を和訳した。
１行１行訳していく度に、頭の中にまるで映画のように映像が浮かんできた。
そして、「GALVESTON BAY」・・・
「ビリーは、手に軍用ナイフを持ち物陰に隠れていた」
いよいよ・・・
えっ・・・そうだったのかぁ。
かなり深い作品です。
ブルースの対訳をしている三浦 久もこの曲が好きとのこと。
そのことをブルースに話したら、東京公演で「三浦さんに捧げる」と言って
「GALVESTON BAY」を歌いだした。
丁度、僕が観に行った日の出来事です。生でこの曲が聴けて感激しました。

And brought in the Texas Klan One humid Texas night there were three shadows on the harbor Come to burn the Vietnamese boats into the sea In the fire's light shots rang out Two Texans lay dead on the ground Le stood with a pistol in his hand A jury acquitted him in self-defense As before the judge he did stand But as Le walked down the courthouse steps Billy said "My friend you're a dead man." One late summer night Le stood watch along the waterside Billy stood in the shadows His K-bar knife in his hand And the moon slipped behind the clouds Le lit a cigarette, the bay was still as glass As he walked by Billy stuck his knife into his pocket Took a breath and let him pass In the early darkness Billy rose up Went into the kitchen for a drink of water Kissed his sleeping wife Headed into the channel And cast his nets into the water Of Galveston Bay ガルヴェストン・ベイ １５年間、リー・ビン・ソンは ベトナムの山やデルタで アメリカ人と共に戦った '７５年、サイゴンが陥落し、軍を離れ 家族を約束の地に連れて来た テキサス州シーブルック それにいくつかのメキシコ湾沿いの小さな町 デルタ地帯で故郷に似ていた 機械工として働き、金を貯め いとこと共同でエビ漁船を買った そしてガルヴェストン湾で漁をした 朝、陽が昇る前 眠っている娘にキスをし 海峡を抜けて 水中に網を投げる ビリー・サターはクアン・トゥリの山地で ベトコンと戦った チュ・ライの戦いで負傷し '６８年に国へ送り返された そして結婚し、父親が持っていた船に乗り 湾の漁場で漁をした 朝、眠っている息子にキスをし 水中に網を投げた 南が陥落し、共産主義者がサイゴンになだれ込んだ時 ビリーは自分の家でＴＶを見ていた ベトナムからの難民が同じ町に住み自分たちが育った海で漁をするのを ビリーと友だちは苦々しく見ていた 港の近くのバーではどこでも アメリカはアメリカ人のものだという話でもちきりだった 誰かが「奴らを追い出したかったら焼き討ちしなければ駄目だ」と言い テキサスのクー・クラックス・クランを呼んだ ある蒸し暑い夜、ベトナム人の船に 火をつけに来た三人の男の影 燃え盛る炎の中、銃声が聞こえた 二人のテキサスの男が撃たれて死んだ リーが手に銃を持って立っていた 彼が裁判長の前に立った時 陪審は正当防衛で無罪の評決を下した しかしリーが裁判所の階段を降りて来た時 「おまえを必ず殺す」とビリーが言った 夏の終わりのある晩 リーは岸辺で見張りをしていた ビリーは、手に軍用ナイフを持ち 物陰に隠れていた 月が雲の後ろに隠れた リーはタバコに火をつけた 湾は鏡のように静かだった リーが歩いて来た時 ビリーはナイフをポケットに戻し 息を吸い、彼をそのまま行かせた 夜明け前の暗闇の中 ビリーは起き上がり 台所へ行き、水を飲み 眠っている妻にキスをし 海峡に出て行く そしてガルヴェストン湾の水中に 網を投げる （訳詩：三浦 久） |
