Outline I, the owner of this website, was a research scientist in industry during 1959-2003, and my major R&D areas were robotics, mechatronics, visual image processing, and artificial intelligence. Particularly, R&Ds of practical technologies and their industrial applications were my major concern. In this site, my personal activities and contributions are briefly introduced, together with the history of the related technological areas.
Recent Articles My article (in English) "Reminscences of my Machine Vision Research and IAPR Activities" was published in the IAPR Newsletter Vol.34, No.3 (July-August 2012). Also, my article (in Japanese) "Hello, My Kindred Spirits in Robotics -Social and Personal Axes in R&D Activities-" was published in the RSJ ( Robotics Society of Japan) Journal Vol.33, No.4 (May 2015).
IAPR

The IAPR stands for International Association for Pattern Recognition, and is an organization that I have been involved in for long years. It aims at the advancement of Pattern Recognition Technology and the related fields, and holds biennial conference called ICPR (International Conference on Pattern Recognition). Most memorable conferences for me were the 19th ICPR 2008 held in Tampa, Florida, USA, and the 21st ICPR 2012 held in Tsukuba, Japan.

At the ICPR 2008 in Tampa, I served as a general co-chair, and could contribute to the success of the conference.

The ICPR-2012 took place in Tsukuba, and I served as a member of its advisory committee.

Thanks to the cooperation received from the participants and the members of organizing committee, these conferences achieved the highest success.

In this website, you will find some information on IAPR and ICPRs. I hope you will be interested in this organization, as well as its conferences in the years to come.

After an impressive 40-year career at Hitachi in Japan, Masakazu Ejiri retired from the robotics industry in 2003. He leaves a legacy of outstanding technology developments in the areas of control engineering, robotics, pattern recognition, machine vision and artificial intelligence. Dr. Ejiri's most famous achievement was the development of the world's first computer controlled fully automatic transistor assembly system using innovative machine vision technology in 1973. He pioneered work on an intelligent robot that assembles objects from plan drawings. His work has generated more than 200 patent applications. Dr. Ejiri's work has been widely recognized throughout the world, which is why he is a Fellow of the IEEE, the IAPR, the IEICE, and the RSJ, the Robotics Society of Japan. He also served as President of the Robotics Society of Japan during 2001-2003.

Robotics
Through the aggressive research activities since mid 1960s, the robotics in Japan has made a great progress. Automation in manufacturing industry was a main target at its early stage of development. Nowadays, the areas of application are broadened to medical, entertainment, rescue, and many others. In this concern, the RSJ, Robotics Society of Japan, has been playing an important role in promoting the progress of robotics since its establishment, and it celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2002 when I was serving as the president.

Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis
Vision-related technologies such as pattern recognition, image processing, and computer vision also made a big stride in Japan since their starts in mid 1960s. Semiconductor assembly and mail-sorting were two leading applications contributed to the advancement of technologies. Nowadays, a wide variety of applications are being attempted, and the security is one of the promising applications for realizing advanced, networked, information society. Especially noteworthy is the contribution of the IAPR (International Association for Pattern Recognition) and its Japanese counterpart, MVA committee, to promote the R&D progress. I was also involved deeply in these organizations.
