ふるさとの山
越前市（旧武生市）の街からみて西の方角に、『鬼ヶ嶽』という山がある。その昔、山腹の岩屋に住みついていた鬼が、南麓を川沿いに都へと上る旅人を襲い、ときには府中の町（越前市）まで荒らしに出かけたという伝説がある。珍しくも女の鬼で、今でも日野川に白鬼女橋という名の橋がある。このあたりで首尾よく退治されたと言い伝えられている。
この標高５３３メートルの山に、ALT（英語教師）として赴任していた英国の若い女性が萩原與市氏らの案内で登り、山頂の祠の登山者ノートに手記を残した。その原文を以下に示す。
I’m sitting at the top of Onigadake with Mr. Hagiwara, Mr. Yagi
and Mrs. Hashimoto. It’s called the “Devil’s mountain”, but bathed
in sunlight, with pine trees barely moving in the wind, it seems peaceful
and far removed from anything demonic.
On the way up, we met an old man who’s climbed this mountain over
a thousand times. Mr. Hagiwara described it as his “purpose in life”
since he lost his wife.
I myself could stay up here all day. You can see the Japan Sea on one side, Mt. Hino and the high mountains of Fukui prefecture on the other.
Behind us is an open view all the way to the other side of Fukui
city. It keeps clouding over and a few drops of rain are falling, but Takefu
down below us is a big pool of sunlight, surrounded by its grid of rice
fields with gentle smoke rising from them as the stubble is burned.
Fukui-ken is beautiful. Thank you for bringing me.
