gHanamih means gflower viewingh or gcherry blossom viewingh which is one of the most popular events of the Japanese spring. The favorite flower of the Japanese is the cherry blossom. When the Japanese say gflower viewingh, there is no need to mention which flower will be viewed. In spring, people go out to the mountains and parks for gHanamih and have a party under the cherry trees.
There are many places known for their beautiful cherry blossoms in Fukushima-city. The most beautiful place is Hanami-yama which literally means gFlower-viewing Mountainh. Itfs located in the eastern side suburb of Fukushima-city. The people in this area began to grow flowers about 70 years ago as a side job to farming. Recently the number of the flower-raising farmers has increased because of an increasing demand for flowers. Now in this area more than fifteen farm-houses raise flowers. The beauty at the full bloom in this area is beyond all description. The area is well-known as a gShangri-Lah with various kinds of flowers.
The most famous farmer in this area is Mr. Ichiro Abe. At first he began to grow vegetables and fruit to sell, but the land was unsuitable, so he began growing flowers instead. 40 years ago he opened his farmyard to the public, and furthermore, he did not charge admission. So many people can enjoy flower viewing in his flower garden.
One famous photographer, Showtaro Akiyama, visited gHanami-yamah many years ago. He was surprised by the beauty of gHanami-yamah and took many pictures. His photographs became known throughout Japan. The number of visitors has increased progressively. Now, 250,000 people visit gHanami-yamah during flower viewing season.
